Set against the backdrop of a 1940s wartime psych ward, Alice in Mind reimagines Lewis Carroll’s timeless tale through the lens of mental health, deriving inspiration from Alice by Heart by Steven Sater.

Alice’s lifelong friendship with Alfred is tested by his mental illness and declining health. Although deeply in love with him, Alice must come to terms with the heart-breaking reality that they cannot be together as she wishes.

To help them navigate the emotional strain, Alice turns to the comfort of their shared love for Alice in Wonderland.

She recounts the story to Alfred, imagining herself within its fantastical world as a means of escape and connection. In her vivid imagination, the hospital becomes a twisted version of Wonderland, where the staff and other patients take on the roles of the iconic characters. These familiar figures reflect their struggles within the institution, creating a symbolic, emotional landscape for Alice to explore her love, loss, and the tension between her hopes and the reality of Alfred’s illness.

The hospital setting becomes a transformative space, where both the fantastical and the painful conjoin, allowing Alice to process her love for Alfred, her grief, and her growing understanding of what it means to hold on and let go.
