Dr Amanda Williams

Dr Amanda Williams is a part-time Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography, specialising in glacial geomorphology and sedimentology, as well as a broader interest in climate and environmental change. She contributes to a wide range of undergraduate teaching within the disciplines of physical geography and natural hazards. Amanda has broad research interests in glacial and Quaternary environments, as well as pedagogic interests in decolonising physical geography and geoethics.

Amanda teaches mainly Physical Geography and Natural Hazards. She is module leader for GE4011 Earth and Environment and GE5011 Earth Surface Processes Amanda teaches on GE4013 Changing the World, GE4014 Global Hazards and Risk, GE5001 Hazard Processes and Human Vulnerability, GE5012 Going Places, GE6005 Climate Change: Recent Record and Future Prospects, and GE6017 Anthropocene. She also supervises students completing their research proposals for GE5019 Physical Research Methods and GE6001 Dissertation.

Amanda’s principal research interests lie in the fields of Quaternary Science and Glacial Sedimentology. Her doctoral research investigated the Late Devensian glaciation of Anglesey, North-west Wales, using mineral magnetic and geochemical analysis to differentiate between units of different provenance and to investigate potential weathering profiles within glacial sequences in North Wales. Her current research continues to expand on her doctoral research, as well as investigating glacial landforms and sediments associated with retreating glacier in Jostedalsbreen, Norway.

Amanda has also developed wider interests in the implications of geoethics in physical geography, as well as pedagogic research in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Physical Geography, with a particular focus on exploring ways to embed ‘decolonisation of the curriculum’ within undergraduate physical geography teaching.
