Dr Andrew Miles

A Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography and GIS, Andrew specialises in applying geospatial analysis to understand and address real-world challenges and has worked extensively with industrial partners to help them apply these approaches effectively. Though his background is in physical geography, he has worked with organisations from food banks to tech start-ups and local government organisations. He teaches across a range of physical geography and natural hazard management modules, as well as leading teaching in geomatics and remote sensing.

In his wider role, Andrew has led on employability initiatives within the geography and environment subject area, acting as Careers & Employability Link Tutor, as well as leading on the internal Employability Working Group and external facing Industry Advisory Group. He has previously held the role of Programme Leader for Combined Honours Geography, and currently acts as Undergraduate Assessment Officer across all geography and environment programmes, arranging module assessment boards, dealing with breaches of academic conduct and acting as key contact for all assessment related issues within the subject area.

Andrew's teaching spans all programmes within the Geography and Environment subject area, particularly within the areas of geomatics, coastal processes and employability skills.

He is module leader for GE6009 GIS & Remote Sensing, GE6015 Coastal Dynamics and Management and GE5021 Going Places, the latter being a new employability focused module aimed at developing career readiness and raising aspirations amongst second year undergraduate students. He also leads a range of field visits, including for the past few years a residential international field trip to Naples as part of the GE6003 module, as well as forming part of the team leading fist year residential fieldwork to Snowdonia and leading a number of day trips linked to physical geography modules.

His teaching portfolio includes:

o GE4015 Researching Environments

o GE5001 Hazard Processes and Human Vulnerability

o GE5010 Geomatics & Research Design

o GE5018/19 Social/Physical Research Methods & Geomatics

o GE6003 Natural Hazard Assessment & Mitigation

o GE6009 Remote Sensing & GIS

o GE6015 Coastal Dynamics & Management

Andrew has a broad research interest in the application of geospatial analysis and remote sensing technologies to addressing real world challenges. His background is as a physical geographer focused on understanding coastal environments to inform coastal management, however much of his recent work has been focused on the ERDF funded CREST project, supporting SMEs within Shropshire to leverage spatial technologies in order to develop new products or enhance their offering. Within this project Andrew supported more than 20 organisations with projects ranging from scoping exercises and upskilling workshops to more in-depth partnerships, with his work acknowledged in the 2019 State of the Relationship Report produced by the National Centre for Universities and Business.
