History BA (Hons)

Mark Anthony Hanrahan

"A History degree is not just simply reading about ‘the past’, it’s about learning, understanding and respecting peoples’ opinions."

What are you doing now?

I am currently in my third year at nmcn, an engineering company. I have successfully completed my graduate programme gaining experience across a range of different business units, including, Customer Service, Business Development, Proposals, Design, Project Management, and Off-Site Build.

Due to business needs, exasperated by the current Covid situation I spent the last 12 months on-site operating and maintaining a Ceramic Membrane pilot plant on a Water Treatment Works in the Midlands. With the successful conclusion of the Pilot Plant trial, which was another fantastic learning experience, exposing me to a range of tasks, most relevant, those linked to aspects of project management, I secured a role as project co-ordinator. Following mentoring sessions to understand supporting academic opportunities, I researched and chose to complete my Masters in Project Management; preferably at the University of Chester.

What did you enjoy most about your history degree?

History has always been a passion of mine, I especially loved reading and studying about the Medieval period. When it came time to picking a University, the History Department at Chester offered the perfect course for me, due originally, to the modules and assessment mediums.

On reflection; as I complete my Masters application, I realise that the exceptional pastoral support, the social environment and the interventions tailored to enhance my academic leaning, in addition to the amazing lectures made my time studying with the History Department, at Chester something that I cherish and continue to draw upon both personally and professionally.
