Dr Niel Gillard

Niel is the Programme Leader for Law, Law with Business, and Law with Criminology. Niel is a graduate of the School of Law where he completed his LLB Law degree, and a socio-legal doctorate that focused on the relationship between law, culture and gender, and career progression in law firms.

Niel has experience in a variety of roles in the legal and higher education sectors. He has worked in personal injury and medical negligence and has taught on a wide range of modules here and at other institutions. In addition to his interest in legal scholarship, Niel is a keen and active sportsman. He has played basketball to a professional level, and previously coached the University’s men’s basketball team.

Niel is an experienced teacher and has taught across a range of modules at Chester and previously at another institution. He currently teaches on a variety of modules.

Niel is interested in researching in the areas of gender and discrimination law. He has researched the gendered impact of shared parental leave on career progression in the solicitors' profession and presented his research at various conferences. Niel is also interested in researching the interaction between the law and sport.
