Paul Beauchamp
LecturerPaul enjoyed thirty years’ service in policing, retiring in 2022 at the rank of Detective Superintendent. During his career Paul served in uniform and detective roles across every rank, including Counter Terrorism, Force Intelligence, Force Authorising Officer for covert operations and serious and organised crime, Public Protection and Uniform Operations.
Paul was a Tactical Firearms Commander, Senior Investigating Officer, a Kidnap & Extortion Senior Investigating Officer and a Force Hostage & Crisis Negotiator.
Paul joined the Lecturing team at the University of Chester in September 2022.
Paul lectures at Undergraduate level on Advanced Criminal Law and The Protection of Vulnerable Children and Adults. Advanced Criminal Law critically analyses the legally divisive area of Joint Criminal Enterprise, but also educates students in the vital area of criminal disclosure in criminal proceedings. The Public Protection module acquaints students with knowledge and understanding of the key issues and debates with regards to multi-agency working and developing effective investigations in the context of protecting vulnerable children and adults who become or are at risk of being victims of crime.
Paul also lectures on Risk Management and Public Protection, and Serious Organised Crime as part of the MSc in Policing, Law Enforcement and Security. Risk Management and Public Protection, examines how police, law enforcement, and partner agencies handle investigations and mitigate risks to individuals with a focus on identifying and preventing risks to victims, managing offenders, and analysing multi-agency collaboration.
The module on Serious and Organised Crime explores diverse contexts influencing actor involvement in criminal activity and the methodologies applied. It examines national and transnational responses to the threat, in contemporary law enforcement.
Paul examines existing and developing research in the areas of his teaching, with a particular interest in victimology, trauma based responses and the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences in the area of public protection and vulnerability.
Paul maintains close ties with serving police colleagues and available journals in the policing discipline to keep up to date with the relentless pace of change in policing and the multi-agency landscape.
