Dr Svetlana Mysina
Senior LecturerSvetlana came into higher education from multidisciplinary cancer research. Following her undergraduate degree in biology in Russia, she received her PhD in haematology in Germany, then worked as a postdoc in Glasgow and Newcastle upon Tyne until her full-time educational career started at the University of Sunderland (2013) where she was delivering teaching to Biomedical Science students.
My PhD project ‘Ion Channel in the Regulation of Erythrocyte Apoptosis’ under supervision of Professor F. Lang was performed in Physiology Institute, University of Tübingen, Germany.
As a postdoc I led project “Is survival of primitive, quiescent stem cells from patients with chronic myeloid leukemia Bcr-Abl dependent or not?” in world leading chronic myeloid leukaemia research group under supervision of Professor Tessa Holyoake in Beatson Cancer Institute, The University of Glasgow.
After I accepted challenge as a Research Associate in leading Leukemia Research Group headed by Professor Josef Vormoor, and Professor Olaf Heidenreich, Northern Institute for Cancer Research, Newcastle University.
At Newcastle University I have met decision to become a teacher in Higher Education. Here I accomplished my training and was awarded Fellow of Higher Education Academy.
For three years I was an invited lecturer at the Newcastle University, Northumbria University and the University of Sunderland teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Dental School, Medical School, Biomedical Sciences and Health Sciences. My career path led me to the University of Sunderland where I was lecturing until I have accepted post at Chester Medical School.
I am a programme leader for Master Oncology programme (MD7011); leading MS modules MD7003 Clinical Medicine and MD7012 Therapeutic Advances in Oncology.
At the beginning of my research career I was focused on apoptosis like processes in erythrocytes. As a postdoc I researched mechanisms of cancer in chronic myeloid leukaemia. My interests changed then to the paediatric leukaemia and neuroblastoma research. I am looking to expand my scientific expertise into clinical medicine and educational research.
