Ann Qian
Lecturer
After graduating from Durham University with Master’s Degree (LLM, with Distinction) in International Trade and Commercial Law and Shanghai University with Bachelor’s Degree (LLB, top grade) in Criminal Justice, Ann took on a full-time academic research position at the International Merger & Acquisition Centre, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, with publications in China on various legal topics. She then stepped into commercial sector with 8-year extensive experience of Executive Assistant to CEO in SMEs, across London and North West regions, before joining the University of Chester in 2019.
Devoted to a range of modules delivery at the Chester Business School, Ann offers continuous support to undergraduate and postgraduate tutees and supervisees. She is bilingual and bicultural, experienced in working with international students and round time zones. She enjoys interacting with stakeholders and takes pride in delivering outstanding service to diverse student groups in higher education.
Since 2020, Ann has been teaching on a range of modules across Business Management programme and International Business Management programme, including Understanding and Managing People, Global Business Environment, Developing Professional Practices, International Business Operations, Operational Decision-making, Retail Management, Research in Context. Ann also delivered on postgraduate modules such as Strategic Supply Chain Management, Managing Innovation, Creative Thinking and Problem Solving for Managers. She is currently designing a research module for MSc Healthcare Management cohorts.
During her time at the International Merger & Acquisition Centre, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Ann had three textbooks and one journal article published in China on various legal topics.
Ann's current research derives from her daily teaching practices and focuses on motivating international students in UK higher education. The results will help UK business schools not only review their strategies, policies and priorities in marketing and recruitment, but also envisage more effective approaches to teaching and learning delivery. These will contribute to a more inclusive and accessible education, within the fast-evolving landscape of global higher education. Her presentation of the research at the Evasys Student Engagement Conference, October 2023, received highly positive feedback and attracted interests from experts and practitioners from across the sector.
Ann is supervising students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in areas of international business management, employee motivation, organisational performance and healthcare management. Many of her supervisees are international students from across the globe.
