Ralph Ferneyhough

Ralph joined the University of Chester in 2015, following a 20-year career in games development spanning 30+ commercial releases, most notably the critical acclaimed LEGO series. As a senior lecturer and programme leader for the BSc Games Development course, he has helped students graduate into their own games careers, and been recognised in both the Students' Union and staff awards for his contribution over those years. In 2021 he took up the role of Deputy Head of Computer Science, and is currently active in the management of the faculty's learning, teaching and assessment provision, alongside student experience, voice and satisfaction.

Ralph teaches on the collaborative games development modules, directing student teams to create their own group projects. He also teaches C++ games mechanics programming using Unreal engine, and currently manages the undergraduate dissertation / implementation projects. More generally he teaches introductory level computer science topics to new students.

Ralph is interested in all areas of games development, but more specifically that related to games mechanics and the underlying systems driving modern game development. He is also interested in the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence within games, and the management of game development teams. He is currently studying a Professional Doctorate programme combining artificial intelligence and pedagogical management, investigating the use of machine learning as a tool to support HE student success.
