A Day in the Life of a Cybersecurity Student
Master’s Student, Kismat, describes a typical day at the University of Chester.
When I first arrived at the University of Chester to study the MSc Cybersecurity course, I had no idea how transformative this journey would be. From gaining international cultural insights to becoming deeply involved in student life, every day here is packed with learning and growth. Here’s a glimpse into what a typical day looks like for me.
Morning – Lectures
My day usually starts early with a hearty breakfast at the student cafeteria, where I often meet friends from my course. We catch up on assignments and discuss the day's schedule.
By 9am, I’m in my first lecture. The curriculum is robust, covering everything from cryptography to network security. I’m really enjoying learning about ethical hacking and penetration testing. Our lecturer, Ashley Wood, is a seasoned professional in the field, and his real-world anecdotes make the theory come alive.
The interactive nature of the lectures, coupled with hands-on lab sessions, ensures we get practical experience. The university’s state-of-the-art cybersecurity lab is a haven for anyone passionate about hacking ethically.
In addition to lectures, we often have guest speakers from the industry. These sessions provide invaluable insights into the latest trends and challenges in cybersecurity. It’s inspiring to hear from professionals who are at the forefront of fighting cyber threats and to learn about their career paths.
Midday – Study Sessions and Library Time
After my morning lectures, I often head to Seaborne Library. This place has become my sanctuary. With its extensive collection of resources and quiet study areas, it’s perfect for diving deep into research or completing assignments. I usually meet up with my study group here. Collaborating with peers not only enhances my understanding but also makes studying more enjoyable. The library isn’t just about books. The digital resources available are top-notch. Access to numerous online journals and databases means that I can stay up to date with the latest research and advancements in cybersecurity.
The library staff are also incredibly helpful, always ready to assist with finding the right materials or helping you to use the various databases effectively.
Afternoon – Involvement in Student Activities
My afternoons are often reserved for extracurricular activities. Being a Student Voice Representative has been incredibly rewarding. It involves liaising between the student body and faculty to ensure our concerns are heard and addressed. This role has honed my communication and leadership skills significantly.
Additionally, as a Student Ambassador, I get to interact with prospective students, sharing my experiences and answering their queries about life at Chester. This role is particularly fulfilling because I remember how daunting it was to choose a university and a course. Helping others navigate this process is a way for me to give back to the community.
Another highlight is my involvement with Chester Students’ Union (CSU). CSU is a vibrant hub, organising cultural festivals, hosting coding competitions and much more. Being part of CSU provides opportunities to plan and execute events, which is a great way to apply project management skills in real-world scenarios. These events/activities have not only helped me to develop leadership skills but they’ve also broadened my cultural horizons, as I’ve been interacting with students from various backgrounds.
Evening – Networking and Socialising
Evenings are a mix of social and academic activities. The University of Chester hosts numerous networking events, which are fantastic opportunities to connect with industry professionals and alumni. These events have been instrumental in building my professional network, which I’m sure will be beneficial when I step into the job market. I particularly enjoyed a recent cybersecurity conference hosted by the University, where experts discussed emerging threats and innovative defence mechanisms.
On quieter evenings, I enjoy exploring the charming city of Chester. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee at a local café or walking along the historic Roman walls, the city has a unique way of making every moment special. The city itself is a blend of historical charm and modern amenities, making it a great place to study and live.
Night – Wrapping Up and Reflecting
My day typically winds down with a bit of self-study or working on group projects. The course is demanding, but the sense of accomplishment after solving a complex problem or debugging a stubborn code is unparalleled. Before bed, I like to unwind by reading a book or watching a cybersecurity documentary, always eager to learn something new.
Personal Growth and International Experience
Studying at Chester has also been an incredible cultural experience. The University has a diverse student body, and I’ve made friends from all over the world. This exposure to different cultures and perspectives has broadened my world view and enriched my university experience. I’ve participated in cultural exchange events and learned so much about traditions and practices from various countries.
Moreover, the international network I've built here is invaluable. It’s amazing to think that I now have friends and future colleagues across the globe. This network will undoubtedly be beneficial both personally and professionally in the future.
Conclusion
Studying Msc in Cybersecurity at the University of Chester has been a great experience. The mix of challenging lectures, fun student life and the chance to learn about different cultures has made my time here really special.
