Boost Your Employability With Free Evening Language Classes
The chance to take up free evening language classes seemed like too good an opportunity to miss for University of Chester student, Dodi, who talks about her experience of learning a language alongside her undergraduate degree.

Hi, my name is Dodi. I am a second-year BSc Biomedical Science student at the University of Chester, and I've chosen to take evening language classes during the second year of my studies.
There were many evening language classes on offer, ranging from Chinese and Arabic, to various European languages like French. This made the decision very tough, but, in the end, I chose the level one French evening class, as I had some experience of learning French during my time at middle school.
Overview of Classes
During my French classes, there was always a nice, supportive and warm atmosphere, which helped to encourage my learning and development in the language. It was a very welcoming class with a friendly learning environment; this was due to the course being open to students and non-students alike, so people from many different backgrounds and age groups were learning together. The classes promoted a sense of 'no judgement', with people there to learn and to support each other with their language development skills. Ultimately, a great class teacher helps to foster this atmosphere amongst their students.
Another benefit of the course was that I could fit the classes in alongside my studies and extracurricular activities. The evening time slot was perfect as it meant I could get work done beforehand and then chill afterwards.
How Can I Use My Language Skills in the Future?
I see my newly-acquired language skills improving my prospects in terms of my future employability. This is because, in the future, I wish to travel and also climb the career ladder; language skills are highly sought after by employers and are crucial in an increasingly globalised world. I could use my French language skills to take me further in the field of work that I choose to go into, or, they could lead me down an entirely different career path.
One day, I wish to visit France or other nations within the Francophonie. I find not only the language but the cultures of these nations fascinating. With my language skills, I will be able to understand their culture even better. I've really enjoyed learning about the French culture during classes – on one occasion the teacher even brought in French snacks for us all to try!
All This for Free
One of the reasons this course first appealed to me was the fact that it's free to University of Chester students – I think this is a great initiative to try and encourage people to learn a new language. This seems especially relevant in the UK, where many of my friends, who are Home students, say that the language tuition at their high schools left a lot to be desired. I also think it is great for students who might not be able to commit to a daytime course, or, would be less able to afford the classes otherwise. Being a student can be financially difficult, so having the option to attend these free evening classes is a big plus! Also, it is a great social space for the more financially disadvantaged students.
Conclusion
In summary, there are many positives to participating in the free evening language classes. I'd highly recommend them if you're looking to learn a new language in a supportive environment, while enhancing your employability skills at the same time. And, don't forget, it's a chance to make some great new friends along the way.
