DBA Student Research into AI and Shifting Skills - Insight and Achievements
Patrycjusz Szubryt, a DBA student undertaking a Doctorate in Business Administration, shares his research, his achievements and the reason why he decided to study at Chester.
Patrycjusz’s Motivation
Upon completing my Master’s and MBA, I initially felt a sense of fulfilment, believing I had satisfied my thirst for structured knowledge. However, this moment of achievement also sparked the unexpected realisation that I was still driven by a deeper curiosity, a desire to understand more about the intricate intersections of business administration, technology, and uncertainty. This moment is why I decided to pursue a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA).
In 2018, I began collecting my ideas, questions, and materials, unaware that they would eventually evolve into the foundation of my research. I chose the University of Chester for my postgraduate studies, seeking local opportunities for further education. Since then, I have been fortunate to participate in various enriching experiences, from symposiums and TEDx events, to entrepreneurial ventures like Venture Adventure and Venture Pitch. I also joined the Doctoral Delights group, a community where I have found camaraderie, shared challenges, and I have collaborated on meaningful research projects with exceptional individuals.
What makes his research exciting and Patrycjusz’s aspirations
The most captivating aspect of my research journey lies in continually uncovering unexplored topics and recognising the market need and potential demand for the results of my research. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to provide consultancy, share my findings, present my progress, and exchange ideas at various forums. It is immensely satisfying to offer valuable insights, contribute to ideation, and challenge existing opinions in professional and academic realms. My ultimate aspiration is for my research to serve as a playbook for businesses, detailing how to implement AI in a responsive, ethical, and effective manner to maximise benefits. Simultaneously, I aim to establish a foundation for educational purposes and future research.
Patrycjusz’s research
Given the rapid and controversial advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), this research aims to address key factors influencing the successful integration of AI systems within organisations. This study delves into the efficiency and effectiveness of AI as well as human adaptability, attitudes towards change, business aspirations, competitive strategies, and ethical considerations surrounding trust in AI. The core focus of this research is the shifting skill set required by Business Process Managers in today's dynamic business environment.
As AI progresses, certain responsibilities which are traditionally managed by these professionals may become obsolete, while new challenges and expectations emerge. This study aims to establish a framework that identifies the managerial skills necessary for navigating this new era, by comparing current realities with future projections and reflecting on different strategic options, ensuring the successful implementation of AI systems. The ultimate goal is to develop a strategic roadmap that empowers UK organisations to leverage technological advancements effectively, gaining a competitive edge through the acquisition of new skills by business process managers.
The achievement and success he has received already
I had the honour of applying my research progress to shape AI implementation strategy in the educational sector with Runshaw College. Additionally, I had the privilege of participating in the Global Centre for AI and Digital Policy, where I led a multi-disciplinary team conducting AI ethics assessments, providing recommendations for the EU AI Act, reviewing policies for AI development, and preparing the AI and Democratic Values Index (AIDV) for 2023, which assessed AI policies across 80 countries.
I was nominated as an AI panel expert in the Hivemind Network, supporting the financial industry, aviation, healthcare, and life sciences. I have also had the opportunity to deliver speeches and participate in expert panels on AI introduction and readiness, including events such as Women in Fintech, AI in Fintech, AI Horizons, and TEDx Ethical AI Exploration talks.
Although it is an effort that I am continuously putting in, none of this would have happened without my initial conversations with the amazing people at the University of Chester, and I am grateful for that pivotal moment in my life.
