Five Places Within 50 Minutes of Chester
Luisa highlights the places to visit using public transport, within 50 minutes of Chester.
Whilst Chester is a beautiful, historic city with lots to offer, there’s even more to see just a little further afield.
For a trip to a bigger city, or a relaxing countryside break, it’s nice to do something out of the ordinary as you study at Chester.
I thought I would put together a list of the most interesting places to visit nearby, all of which can be reached in under an hour by public transport from Chester.

Liverpool
From shops to bars, clubs to a whole host of activities, Liverpool has it all and is just a 40-minute train ride from Chester. Liverpool has a bounteous history, with places such as Penny Lane, made famous by the Beatles, and Liverpool Football Club’s Anfield Stadium as just some of the most popular places to visit. If you fancy a bit of shopping, the best areas to go to are Liverpool One, St Johns Shopping Centre and the Metquarter.
There are also a variety of places to eat and drink whilst you are visiting the city. One of the most picturesque areas to enjoy a meal is the Albert Docks, which offers many different restaurants and bars by the River Mersey.

Colwyn Bay
Fancy a trip to the beach? Or an ice cream by the sea?
Only 45 minutes from Chester, Colwyn Bay is popular tourist destination located in North Wales. Escape city life and watch the waves roll in from a cute café or feel the sand between your toes as you stroll along the beach.
If you find yourself enjoying the bay and really want to make the most of your day out in North Wales, hop back on the train and head further west to the town of Conwy. With a picturesque old castle, quaint shops and pubs, as well as The Smallest House in Great Britain, Conwy is bursting with rural Welsh charm.

Manchester
You probably already knew that Manchester is home to Oasis, and other iconic musicians, such as The Stone Roses, The Smiths, and many more, but did you know that it was crowned the music capital of the UK?
Of course, there is much more to Manchester than just music! Scattered with beautiful old buildings hosting trendy bars and clubs, there are also many places for fun activities, and even opportunities to play your own version of iconic television gameshows, like The Cube.
There are many unique cafes that are comfortable and quiet for study sessions, and there is also the well distinguished John Rylands Library, famous for its leading research and Neo-Gothic architecture.

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
Whether you have a love for nature or if you simply enjoy hiking in the countryside, take a trip down to the area of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which provides stunning scenery, all just 50 minutes from Chester. Explore the beautiful Welsh countryside as you wander through Trevor and behold a glorious view of the aqueduct and River Dee.
The aqueduct and Llangollen canal are well worth the visit, and they even feature on the UNESCO World Heritage list!
Nestled on the edge of Clwydian Range & Dee Valley National Landscape, it is in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Llangollen canal stretches for miles, making it suitable for a quick afternoon visit or to enjoy for a full day. It is the perfect place for a peaceful walk or an adventurous hike!

Birkenhead Park
Similar to Grosvenor Park, Birkenhead Park provides a tranquil and pretty area to go for a walk or a picnic with friends. You could stop off for a visit as you make your way to Liverpool or go there to spend the afternoon around the park. It is a peaceful escape and alternative scenery to the parks in Chester.
Across the 140 acres of land, there are a variety of walking trails, and it’s a great park to spot local wildlife.
The park is decorated with bridges and buildings and is recognised by being classed as Grade 1 English Heritage.

Followed by: Bus: Birkenhead to Park Road East

If you’re planning on going on any of these trips, I would personally recommend that you buy a railcard, as this will discount one third off all rail travel. Railcards are available to buy through websites such as Trainline, National Rail or Railcard. Keep an eye out during the offer period of Black Friday, as they are often on sale.
