Free Foreign Language Courses for Students at the University of Chester
Interested in learning a new language? Hemanth was pleasantly surprised to find that the University of Chester offers free language courses to its students.

Languages have always fascinated me. There's something special about connecting with people from different cultures through their own words. But, like a lot of students, I figured learning a new language would either be too expensive or too time-consuming to fit into my schedule. That’s why I was so excited when I found out that the University of Chester offers free six-week language taster courses. It felt like the perfect chance to learn something new without any pressure.
Among the many languages I could have chosen, the Spanish taster course stood out to me the most. It wasn’t just about learning the words; it was about immersing myself in a culture I had always admired. When I first thought about learning Spanish, it was mostly out of curiosity. I’ve always been fascinated by the language, the culture and, let’s be honest, the food. As a student at the University, I figured I’d have to find an external course or rely on language apps. But then I came across something amazing; the University offers free language courses to its students! Learning a language can be expensive, so having the chance to do it without paying a penny was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.
Picking the Right Language
The University offers multiple language taster courses, making it easy to explore something new. For me, Spanish was a no-brainer. It’s widely spoken, useful for travel and just sounds beautiful. The taster course is designed for beginners, which was perfect since I was starting from scratch. I took the course over the summer break, attending weekly sessions that were flexible enough to fit around my studies. Spanish Taster Classes
From the first session, I could tell this wasn’t going to be just about grammar and vocabulary drills. The tutor was super friendly and the lessons were interactive, making it easy to stay engaged. We practiced basic conversation, learned about Spanish traditions, and even had a go at discussing famous landmarks and celebrations. One of my favourite parts was learning about 'La Tomatina', the famous tomato-throwing festival. Who knew learning a language could be so much fun?!
What also made a difference was the diverse mix of students in the class. We were all from different backgrounds but we were united by our interest in Spanish. The sessions became a great place to meet new people and build confidence in speaking a new language.
How I Plan to Use Spanish
At first, I wasn’t thinking long-term; I just wanted to get a feel for the language. But now, I can see how useful Spanish will be. Whether it’s for travelling, work or just making conversation with Spanish speakers, it’s a skill that opens so many possibilities. Who knows? Maybe one day, I’ll even study or work in a Spanish-speaking country.
