Great Experiences Studying Digital Marketing at Chester
Becky discusses the fantastic trips and projects she has taken part in as part of her Digital Marketing degree at the University of Chester.
Hi, my name is Becky, and I am currently studying Digital Marketing. This course has enabled me to put a wide range of marketing theory and concepts into practice by engaging in practical experiences. The hands-on projects and visits have been interesting and useful in terms of career planning, but the most exciting project to date was the trip to Warwick Castle.
We visited Stratford-upon-Avon as part of our final module in the first year of our course to gain direct insight into the marketing behind a tourist destination. On the first day, we explored the historic town and got to experience a thrilling ghost tour in the evening, which immersed us in the world of William Shakespeare.
This was a great way to relax and prepare us for visiting Warwick Castle the next day, where it was our task to assess the organisation's branding and consider how it affected the consumer experience. The main aim of the trip was to evaluate the current branding of the castle. We captured authentic images and video-based content to use in a video for social media so we could think about how to sell the experience.
Some of the footage was taken during the falconry show, where a range of magnificent birds took to the skies and even flew amongst the audience! We also attended a presentation by some of the marketing team at the castle, where we got an insight into their mission, key branding elements and generally of what it was like to work at this exciting tourist attraction. Overall, the trip was a great experience that enabled me to get to know my peers better, explore stunning locations and have fun.
For anyone thinking of studying Digital Marketing, I’d say go for it! Here are three key reasons to choose this degree at the University of Chester:
- You’ll gain practical experience that will help you to create your own engaging content and run a campaign. An example of this is how, in the first year of your degree, you get to plan your own campaign for Chester Cathedral to increase awareness of the brand as part of a group project. There is then the opportunity to build on this knowledge and explore social media marketing in your second year where you can run your own campaign for an organisation of your choice.
- You’ll get to grips with technical know-how, including SEO and digital communication methods such as email marketing, affiliate marketing, digital PR and interactive display advertising. You will also learn about the principles of web design, and you can create your own website, implementing key web analytics to monitor performance.
- The future is digital and there are many career opportunities available for this industry. Some possible options include becoming a content manager or social media manager when considering social media marketing as a career path. Alternatively, roles relating to search marketing include becoming a specialist in SEO and paid search. You could also become a market research manager, brand manager, web developer or digital marketing analyst just to name a few. There are plenty of opportunities to explore these career options and learn so much more about the industry throughout the degree.
With a mixture of practical and academic assessments, I have been able to get stuck into the world of Digital Marketing. I’m excited to move into the second year and delve a bit deeper into some of these fascinating subject areas!
