Imogen's Story: Places to go in Chester
Imogen Rendall picks her favourite locations to visit and activities to experience in Chester.
The city of Chester is famous for its rich history – from its city walls, which are nearly 2,000 years old, to its beautiful medieval buildings and streets. There is a reason why it was voted the most scientifically beautiful city in the world!
Walks
One of my favourite walks in Chester is the walk along the city walls. It’s free, great exercise and allows you to really appreciate Chester’s historical beauty. There are some real hidden gems where you can grab a coffee or a bite to eat from as you make your way around!
From parts of the city walls you can also take the steps down to the canal, which you can follow in either direction for a peaceful walk. The tranquility can almost make you forget that you’re in the city!
If you fancy learning a bit more about Chester and its history, you may be interested in taking part in a historical walking tour, or even a ghost tour if you’re feeling brave!
Activities
If you’re studying in Chester, the Roman Gardens are a must-see. This is a great opportunity to learn about the Romans who occupied Chester and get a glimpse into how they lived, plus the Amphitheatre is just across the road (and they’re both free!).
One of my favourite attractions in Chester is Sick to Death, a gory museum dedicated to the history of medicine, that’ll make you glad you were born in a time of modern healthcare!
Fancy yourself as a bit of a detective? Then it’s time to put your and your mates’ skills to the test at Breakout Chester. Choose from a variety of themed rooms where you will work together in order to solve riddles and clues to (hopefully) break free!
Cafés
You can’t go wrong with popping to a café for a drink and maybe a tasty little treat! Luckily, Chester has an abundance of cosy cafés to choose from, whatever you fancy.
Situated on the city walls, adjacent to the Eastgate Clock is Huxley's café. Whether you’re after a cup of coffee, an ice cream or even one of their own craft beers, this is the place to go.
One of my favourite spots for breakfast in Chester has got to be none other than Bridge Street Coffee. They offer a delicious full English breakfast and breakfast sandwiches, or if you’re after something sweet, they have a great collection of cakes, scones and other treats, not to mention their coffee!
If you feel like getting creative whilst you enjoy a beverage, I recommend heading up to Pictura Studios on Eastgate Row. Simply choose an artsy activity, from pottery painting to clay sculpting, and let your creativity flow!
Chester is full of little treasures to explore, and this is only a handful of those. The more you look, the more you’ll discover!
