Looking Back on my First Term
Mature Student Alex reflects on her first term studying psychology at Chester.
Hey there! My name is Alex. I am a mature student at the University of Chester. I am originally from the beautiful west coast of Canada and came to the UK to live and study. Here’s a little about my course, how my first term went, and what has helped me adjust to student life.
What course are you studying? Why?
I am studying BSc Psychology. My interest in psychology grew in my early twenties. More from life experiences than academic exposure. I knew I wanted to help people dealing with psychological trauma and learn how trauma affected brain function. From that knowledge, we can construct better treatment plans and even reverse the effects of psychological trauma in someone’s life. Pretty inspiring, right?
What do you like most about your course?
The school of psychology and every aspect of the faculty is honestly amazing. Not only am I learning so much in my lectures, but the staff are super friendly, supportive and approachable. We have access to so many fun machines that help us with study design and our dissertation. If I had to choose one thing, it would be the depth of what you learn in the course. From psychopathology to statistics and neuroscience, you are well equipped going into your chosen career.
What has been the biggest challenge for you in this term?
My biggest challenge was getting out of my comfort zone to meet new people. But being brave when meeting new people is key (scary, I know). People tend to like you more than you think. Also, the University has plenty of events and opportunities for you to find your people. I met one of my best friends during a mature student mixer at Chester’s Student Union. So, there are plenty of ways for you to connect with new friends. Join a society, get a job on site, go to student union events, and much more.
Academically, my biggest challenge was getting into the routine of learning again. After not being a student for so long you tend to be out of practice. The support from lecturers and my Personal Academic Tutor made it a much easier transition for me. They’ve been a huge encouragement through the first term.
What are you looking forward to in your next term?
Honestly, the assessments. We’re getting closer to their due dates. I’m excited to get started on them and do the research. It will be an awesome experience to start applying what we’ve been learning. I can’t wait to learn more about psychology as well, and see what opportunities I’ll have to work on my academic and employability skills.
