Nirsha’s Experience of Chester
Hear about Nirsha’s journey from applying to studying at the University of Chester.
Before coming to the University of Chester, I worked as an English lecturer in a college for three years in Kerala. I enjoyed my teaching, and it made me realise that I wanted to improve my skills while continuing my studies.
Why did you choose the MA Education, Society and Globalisation at Chester?
I chose the University of Chester as it has more than 180 years of experience in teaching and the University seemed diverse and inclusive.
The Master’s in Education, Society and Globalisation appealed to me as the modules incorporate a blended learning approach.
What do you like most about your course?
The course has helped me deepen my understanding of teaching and learning and has developed my critical thinking ability.
My tutors are amazing people who support me through thick and thin, and I enjoy the teaching methods each tutor uses.
Discussion-based classrooms also help me to observe ideas from different perspectives. Our classroom consists of multiple international students, and their experiences and opinions on issues help me understand, accept, and broaden my perspective.
What is your favourite part of the learning?
One of my favourite modules was Children and Communities, as it had the most interesting range of insights on many factors related to the social and cultural context of childhood.
My Tutor, Dr Paula Hamilton, made this module exciting for us by employing various teaching techniques. I enjoyed the introduction of a different assessment method where we had the opportunity to create engaging digital presentations as the assessment.
What do you like most about the University of Chester and the surrounding area?
I love my university campus and its classrooms; I especially adore the serene nature of the campus. I have also been able to meet a lot of friends and wonderful teachers in the University. I’m happy to be a part of the University community.
Chester is a beautiful city with a grand history. The historical buildings fascinate me and I am constantly mesmerised by the magnificence of the Chester Cathedral. As a person who enjoys historical beauty, Chester is an absolute wonder for me.
There are also a lot of things to do like visit the cathedral, Roman Amphitheatre, and Chester Zoo.
What do you like to do outside of your studies?
I love to spend my time by shopping, or visiting Grosvenor Park when it is sunny, to observe the restless squirrels in the park. I also enjoy walking beside the river Dee as it is calming, and I get to enjoy the view. There is always something to do in the city.
What advice would you give an international student considering spplying to the University of Chester?
I would advise all new international students to make sure that they communicate their needs and worries. There are a lot of services within the University to support them academically and personally, so I would advise that they make use of these.
And most importantly, they should try to balance their personal and academic life when they get here. Do not just indulge in studies, get some personal time too!
