Rhys Gets Set for the Future With a Unique Games Industry Placement
Games Development student Rhys shares his amazing placement experience with Draw and Code who specialise in AR, VR, games and creating immersive installations. They serve global clients and Rhys spent eight weeks with them at their Liverpool studio.

Games Development Is a Unique Blend of Science and Art
Games Development is a course that's a blend of science and art. You get to do things like problem solving and math challenges, but also get to be creative, making art and coming up with stories.
I am doing my degree part time and Chester offering the part-time course was the main reason I chose Chester, so when doing my placement, I was able to do it over a longer period of time with fewer hours per a week in accordance to my part-time course.
A Confidence Boosting Placement
My time at Draw & Code was really enjoyable. The studio had a welcoming atmosphere and was a genuinely inspiring and fun place to work and learn. I felt like I was treated as a valued team member from day one and I appreciated how much trust and responsibility I was given throughout my placement.
I met lots of nice people and the office dog, I got to try out some really cool Augmented Reality tech and I feel like I got a good portfolio piece out of it. It was a boost to my confidence with some good references for my CV and contacts that may help in the future.
A Terracotta Army Inspired Portfolio Piece
I wanted a character focus for my project and with the Liverpool World Museum exhibiting the Terracotta Army in 2018, modelling a terracotta warrior was fitting. I modelled the warrior in Blender, following industry-standard workflows including sculpting, retopology, baking, rigging and texturing. Alongside that, I assisted the 3D printing technician with hardware setup, troubleshooting, and file preparation. I designed and produced practical parts such as hardware brackets and multicolour 3D-printed keyrings, some of which were used at public events. I also participated in user testing sessions for immersive AR experiences, contributing feedback from a UX perspective.
Communication, Collaboration, and Feedback
One of the biggest lessons was that technical skills are only part of being effective in a professional setting. I learned how important good communication, collaboration, and feedback are - especially in a hybrid work environment. I became more confident in presenting ideas, taking the initiative and adapting to team workflows. The experience gave me a much clearer understanding of how creative and technical roles work together in a real studio.
What the Future Holds
My immediate goal is to finish my Games Development degree. After that, I hope to find a role in games or immersive tech - either in a studio or through freelance work. I’m also open to postgraduate study if the right opportunity comes along.
Outside university, I’m working on a few personal projects. I’m rebuilding a multiplayer game that was well received and might be featured on the university’s Itch page. After some encouragement from tutors and classmates my plan is to try to add online multiplayer, upgrade the visuals and hopefully release it as a small, fun indie game.
I’m developing a long-term comic/manga project, using my 3D skills to create reference models for poses, environments, and props. It started as a way to improve my 2D and 3D art skills, but I’d love to eventually publish something if it all comes together.
Working Alongside Professionals Was a Great Experience
The team was fantastic - approachable, encouraging and supportive. I never felt like "just the placement student." Everyone was open to my ideas and happy to let me get involved in different tasks. It was a great experience to work alongside professionals who are genuinely passionate about what they do.
It’s a brilliant studio environment where creativity and collaboration are clearly valued. I’m really grateful I got the chance to be involved, and I’ve taken a lot from the experience that I’ll carry forward into my future career.
