Ruth's Favourite Places in Cheshire

On the 30th of March, we celebrate Cheshire Day! I’m Ruth, a final-year student here at the University of Chester, studying Education and Spanish. After living in Chester for three years, I’ve had plenty of time to explore the county and pick out some of my favourites which I think other students would also enjoy.

West Kirby

Accessible by bus, car and train, West Kirby is a small coastal town 18 miles away from Chester city centre. Perfect for any time of year, as long as the weather is dry. The highlight of West Kirby for me is the path which goes out and around the sea waters which does not get affected by the tides meaning you can walk around it at any time. It is super tranquil, the sound of the water slightly splashing. There is a café right on the beach which has beautiful views and great coffee too! During the warmer months, there are also activities such as paddleboarding and kayaking. And, for when the weather isn’t so kind, you have the town centre which is bustling with shops and more cafes.

Tatton Park

If you are lucky enough to have access to a car whilst at university, Tatton Park is a lovely outdoor green space, owned by the National Trust, costing £8 per car to enter. Located right next to Manchester Airport, it’s a bit further afield but great if you have a whole day to explore somewhere new. Throughout the year, there are different events which take place, for example, the scarecrow festival as well as events through the festive periods. There is also the chance to visit the house, which is an additional cost, and great if you are into history and stately homes.

Chester

I could not write a blog about Cheshire without mentioning, Chester city centre itself. There’s so much to say about Chester, the rows, Grosvenor Park, the famous Chester Zoo, the Shropshire Union Canal, the infinite number of cocktail bars, the shops, the individually owned cafes, the friendly smiles when you pass people in the street, the racecourse, Storyhouse. The list goes on, I don’t think I will ever get bored of Chester, there is always something going on. The city is thriving with local groups and community events, whenever I search ‘things on in Chester’ online something comes up that I’d never have imagined, for example, the rubber duck race at the beginning of April.

If you’re planning on studying at the University of Chester, you’ll always have plenty to get involved with. A simple Google search will give you a long list of activities. I recently joined the craft club at Storyhouse and started volunteering at a local Rainbow group. There really is something for everyone, Cheshire is the county which keeps on giving.
