Studying Digital Marketing at the University of Chester
Hear from Digital Marketing student, Louise, who talks about how her University work placement has led to a graduate job, whilst the Programme Leader, Beth Morris, goes through some of the opportunities available to students on the course.
From the first day on your Digital Marketing degree, you will begin to learn the skills that will help you develop into a digital marketing expert. You learn marketing fundamentals alongside practical application, and you build your professional portfolio with live digital projects.
You also create and launch your own website, which is just one of the things that final year student, Louise, has enjoyed completing as part of her degree. Her dedication and hard work throughout the course has paid off, as she has secured a graduate role in membership marketing.
Louise’s Thoughts on the Degree
The course was fun and engaging. And the lecturers were super helpful in pushing me to my limit not only to develop my skills for the industry, but also to develop my own business.
The learning on the course helped me understand the wider context of the industry and the future issues that are relevant in the industry I will be working in.
With regards to the placement, I hadn't worked with the company before, and I got it by applying through the University’s placement system. The company made an offer for me to work a few hours with them before my placement started, and this experience along with the placement was really inspiring.
After my placement was over, I volunteered to stay on with the company during the summer break. I then started to work for them around ten hours a week, and was eventually offered a full-time job for when I finished University. I wouldn't have got the job if I hadn't applied for it as my placement, so the University’s industry connections have been extremely helpful for me personally.
Programme Leader, Beth Morris’, Thoughts
Throughout their degrees, Louise and her peers have built websites, ran live social media campaigns, developed prototype apps and produced blogs and podcasts. Asking our students to develop these skills helps them to compile their professional portfolios as they progress throughout the course. This provides them with a foundation of work that they can showcase to potential employers and clients when applying for placements or jobs after university.
The final year students on the course this year were challenged to take a highly complex topic and communicate the key issues in a professional and accessible format. This approach combines the development of essential digital marketing skills, specialist digital marketing knowledge and personal branding techniques.
Louise excelled at this task, and she has produced not only a highly informative piece, but also a valuable learning resource for fellow students and marketers.
Artificial Intelligence is not something we shy away from as marketers. However, as Louise demonstrates so powerfully in her post, to use it effectively we need to be aware of the challenges and opportunities it poses.
The Digital Marketing course allows you to pursue your own interests, gain new skills and make connections for your future.
