Top 5 Reasons to Attend an Open Day
Master’s student, Meg, highlights the benefits of attending a university Open Day and outlines why you should visit the University of Chester.
Attending university Open Days is a key part of your application process when thinking about where you want to study. Open days offer a perspective that you can’t get from a website or brochure alone as they help you imagine what life might be like as a student. From a current Master’s student, here are my top five reasons to attend an Open Day!
-
Experience the campus atmosphere
One of the most important reasons to attend an Open Day is to get a feel for the campus and the university itself. Walking through the campus, visiting lecture halls, libraries, common areas, and experiencing it firsthand will give you a true sense of what life could be like if you were a student at that university. Sometimes just seeing it for yourself can impact how you feel about the university and if it’s for you.
-
Meet the staff and students
The opportunity to meet members of staff and current students is also something that can’t be missed during an Open Day. Engaging in conversations with lecturers can give you a better understanding of their teaching style, what the modules of the course you’re interested in are like, and what being taught by them involves. You can ask much more specific questions in person and get to know career paths and opportunities that you might not have known about before.
-
Get all the key information
Sometimes, reading information about your chosen course on a university website can be overwhelming. Open Days are a great alternative to looking online and you can gather leaflets and handouts that highlight the key information you need, making it a lot more digestible. Additionally, you’ll be able to find out more about services that might be a little trickier to source on your own, such as finance, wellbeing, disability support, and careers. These teams usually hold talks or have someone for you to speak with to really understand all of the benefits of being a student at that particular university.
-
Walk around the city
Open Days are the perfect chance to have a walk around the surrounding area of the university you are planning on attending if you don’t live locally. Chester, for example, has lots to offer, from escape rooms to historic walks around the walls to incredible places to shop. Liking the city that you’re going to be studying in is sometimes just as important as liking the university itself, as you’re going to have to live there for a few years!
-
Have fun
As much as you’ve got to think about studying and working hard, university is also a time to do new things and meet people. Open Days are a great place to meet the people who may be on your course in the future, and you can get an idea of what the social life will be like at university. There are always lots of things to see and do, and it’s a day where everyone wants to help YOU, so make sure to get involved and have fun!
We hope to see you at an Open Day very soon! Make sure to check out all upcoming visit opportunities.
