THE SUN AND THE STARS

Ahmed Selou-Abdo

I never thought

I could shine as

Bright as the sun and the stars

I had never seen anyone like me

I felt alienated, unoriginal, undeserving

But at the same time

In a sick and twisted way, I felt alone

As if no one who deserved

To shine was like me

They didn’t think like me

Or look like me or act like me

Until, I saw a light

Silver and shining ever so bright

Enclosed in a dark persona

To everyone else he was anyone else

But to me, he was a sign, one of change

That was the first time I saw the star

And I shall never forget how he glistened

In the night sky

As his silver light shone on me, It enlightened me

I hadn’t basked in the suns light

Until much later

But when I did

My god was it worth the wait

And in its light I sat

As her rays hit my golden skin

I could feel her energy and power

I could feel her similarities coursing

Through my veins

I could feel her

It took me far too long to realise how

Bright I can shine

So to you dear reader

Like the sun and the stars and anything

In between

May you too shine ever so brightly
