Biography
Bridget Caffrey is a senior lecturer in social work. She is based in the Social Work division of the School of Society, within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Society. at the University of Chester. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Bridget was awarded a Doctor in Professional Studies in February 2025. Her thesis was tilted: 'Utilising a community cultural wealth model to explore African heritage social work student stories from placement: A critical ethnographic study'. Bridget was awarded University Social Work Lecturer of the Year in November 2023. Bridget is a qualified social worker, registered with Social Work England. She is a qualified practice educator and retains a strong interest in practice learning. She teaches across BA, MA and apprenticeship social work programmes, and is the M.A. in Social Work admissions lead. Bridget is an active researcher, collaborating with other disciplines.
Teaching and Supervision
Bridget teaches and assesses students across BA, MA and apprenticeship social work programmes. She was awarded Social Work Lecturer of the Year in November 2023. Her teaching includes generic social work topics and adult specific knowledge and research. She has written modules, delivered modules and co-worked across many areas of the social work programmes. Bridget provides doctoral supervision, currently acting as a second supervisor.
Research and Knowledge Exchange
Bridget applies visual and creative research methods to her studies. She enjoys collaborating with other disciplines, undertaking joint studies with nurse and allied health colleagues. Bridget has a particular interest in student social workers experiences on placement, especially the challenges and barriers encountered by social work students from minoritised ethnic communities. Bridget's social work values underpin her social justice aims.
