Dr Beth Durrell
Year 2 & Secondary Care Placement Lead
Biography
Beth is the Academic Lead for Year 2 and the Secondary Care Placements Lead for the MBChB course. After graduating as a doctor, she trained as a psychiatrist and worked in the NHS as a consultant. Beth has a long running interest in medical law, and completed a PGDip in Mental Health Law and the Diploma in Legal Medicine. She worked for four years as a medicolegal advisor for a defence organisation and then worked as the Senior Medical Case Examiner in Fitness to Practise at the General Medical Council, with a particular interest in unwell doctors. On moving to academia, Beth worked as Deputy Lead for IPE, and then as Phase 1 Lead for Professionalism at the School of Medicine in UCLan. She has an ongoing interest in professionalism, student wellbeing and fitness to practise.
Teaching and Supervision
Beth has taught professionalism, IPE and active bystander to medical and PA students. She created an innovative mock inquest to teach courtroom skills to medical students at UCLan. She has also been involved in communication skills and EDI teaching. She has also taught MRes students about clinical ethics and MSc students about clinical reasoning.
