Biography

As Senior Lecturer in Geography Education at the University of Chester, Mary-Anne McCarthy is responsible for overseeing the progress and development of the Associate Teachers studying for a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) in Secondary Geography. As part of this role Mary-Anne visits local schools to support School Based Teacher Educator Mentors in supporting their Associate Geography Teachers. Mary-Anne has nearly 20 years teaching experience in Key stage 3, 4 and 5 Geography and KS3 and 4 Humanities. Her experience including leadership of departments and whole school improvement projects. As a member of the Mentor Development Team Mary-Anne delivers training to school and university based mentors through both live and asynchronous delivery methods. As well as developing online resources to further support mentoring practice and development. Mary-Anne also teaches on the Post Graduate Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring.

Research and Knowledge Exchange

As a practitioner of Geography Mary-Anne uses her classroom experience to research issues around eco-anxiety and methods that can be used to support learners in schools. Mary-Anne also has a keen interest in mentoring and is part of the Mentoring and Coaching in Education research group.
