Biography
Meggen Gondek researches and teaches across a range of archaeological methodologies and topics. She provides research and teaching experience in early medieval archaeology, art and landscapes across all undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research programmes in Archaeology at the University. She also works for the AHRC as Head of RICHeS Infrastructure Headquarters (Research Infrastructure for Conservation and Heritage Science). RICHeS is a long term, £80 million commitment from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) – part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) – to support excellence and collaboration within heritage and conservation science.
Teaching and Supervision
Professor Gondek contributes to teaching on both the undergraduate and taught postgraduate Archaeology programmes. Some of the material she covers includes topics such as: Early Medieval Archaeology of Northern Europe Archaeological Methods and Techniques Archaeological Research and Professional Skills Development (GIS, Project Management) Archaeology of Later Iron Age to Early Medieval Britain and Ireland Early Medieval Art and approaches to art She has supervised several successful research (MRes, MPhil and PhD) students and continues supervising on topics such as: early medieval sculpture, approaches to landscapes of the early medieval period and multi-period landscape studies of the Irish Sea littoral.
Research and Knowledge Exchange
Professor Gondek's main research interests are in the early medieval archaeology of Northern Britain, particularly Scotland. She works to contribute to new thinking on the production and meaning of early medieval sculpture, the development of power centres, kingdoms and the early church from the later Iron Age to the early medieval period by incorporating theories of materiality and practice alongside methods in landscape archaeology and art history.
