Biography
Dr Richard Millington started working at the University of Chester in 2012 as a Visiting Lecturer in German. In 2018, he was made a permanent member of staff and Lecturer in German, becoming Senior Lecturer in German in 2021.
Teaching and Supervision
In terms of teaching, Dr Millington delivers sessions on a range of subjects. He teaches German language, culture and current affiars at all levels. Alongside this, he teaches European politics and culture. More recently, Dr Millington has taught modules on the history of East Germany, as well as the history of crime in the UK. He has supervised undergraduate and postgraduate research students successfuly.
Research and Knowledge Exchange
Dr Millington's research interests lie in history, memory, and dictatorship studies. His PhD research focused on the anti-regime uprsing of 17 June 1953 in East Germany. Dr Millington investigated public and private memories of this major event in German history to conclude on the nature of memory and dictatorial efforts to shape and alter it. His current research project examines crime and criminality in East Germany. It draws conclusions on the everyday experience of East German citizens, as well as peceptions and conceptions of crime in a dictatorship. Dr Millington has also published on the memory of slavery in his home city of Liverpool. He has since moved to BlueSky, posting regularly about his work and all things East German.
