Senior Lecturer
Biography
Sonia works as a Senior lecturer on the Pre-registration Adult Bachelor of Nursing Programme and the Advanced Practice Programme based at Wheeler. She is also a member of an Ethics Committee. Sonia started Nursing in 1990 and gained experience in general surgery, working in an acute-adult setting in secondary care. After completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Practice in 2009, she worked as a surgical Advanced Nurse Practitioner ( ANP) and trained as a surgeon first assistant. She went to work at the Digestive Diseases Department at Aintree University Hospital as an ANP in Gastroenterology. It was during this time she was able to complete an MSc in Advanced Healthcare Practice (Clinical). Working within all four pillars of advanced practice, she became a visiting Lecturer in 2017 and then became a permanent Senior Lecturer in August 2021. On a part-time basis, she works in the urgent treatment centre as an ANP to keep up to date with current practices and provide her student with authentic teaching experiences.
Teaching and Supervision
Pre-Reg-Nursing Adult Field, based at Wheeler ML for Practice Learning NU6101 Adult Nursing Level 6 Numeracy NUX601 Adult Nursing Level 6 Practice Skills/Simulation weeks both Level 5 and 6. ML for NU4001 Advanced Practice ML for NM7266 Level 7 and support OSCE’s for Advanced Practice and Non-Medical Prescribing.
Research and Knowledge Exchange
Research for her MSc dissertation, investigating NMP awareness of compliance, a quantitative pilot study using a survey technique was published in the Journal of Prescribing Practice in Sept 2020. She also peer reviews clinical work for the Mark Allen Group. Sonia is at present working with colleagues on a systematic review and preparedness for practice.
