Stephen Clarke

Biography

Stephen Clarke is Senior Lecturer in Art and Design: Critical and Contextual Studies in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Education at the University of Chester, UK. He delivers a comprehensive lecture programme for the undergraduate courses in Fine Art, Photography and Graphic Design that covers the history of art, photography, and design as well as a broader understanding of visual culture. His teaching is informed by his practice as a regularly published author of critical writing. Clarke also teaches on the undergraduate course in Photography in relation to his own work as a published and exhibiting artist.

Teaching and Supervision

Stephen Clarke delivers and examines undergraduate modules across the Art and Design department. His main responsibility is to the contextual studies components of the Fine Art, Photography and Graphic Design courses.

Research and Knowledge Exchange

Stephen Clarke undertakes research in relation to photography and collage. The foundation of his research is his archive of photographs taken since 1981, as well as other printed matter such as family snapshots and souvenir ephemera. He has an interest in tourism and the Heritage Industry; New Topographics and documentary photography; photomontage and collage. As part of his practice photobooks are the main form of dissemination: his photographs have been published by the independent publishers Café Royal Books, Fistful of Books, The Velvet Cell, and Out of Place Books.
