Biography
Sohail is an Associate Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry and Deputy Head of Allied Health. Sohail is Programme Leader for MSc Human Nutrition and is also the Senior Postgraduate Research Tutor for the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Society.
Teaching and Supervision
Sohail is Programme Leader for MSc Human Nutrition, a course which he divised and validated in 2012 and is professionally accredited with the Association for Nutrition. Sohail leads or contributes to a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules across the Division of Allied Health. Key areas of teaching exprertise are primarily related to Nutritional Biochemistry (particularly bioenergetics); cardiovascular disease; nutritional epidemiology and vitamin D metabolism. Sohail is a Faculty Senior Postgraduate Research Tutor and has supervised six doctoral students to successful completion.
Research and Knowledge Exchange
Sohail leads the Micronutrient Metabolism Research Group within the Division of Allied Health and his research interests include, Vitamin D and health as well as the biochemical and physiological role of wider micronutrients in health. Sohail's research expertise revolves around carrying out clinical trials of nutritional supplements to improve health outcomes such as cardiovascular disease and anaemia. Sohail's current focus is vitamin D deficiency which is a global health issue that affects more than one billion children and adults worldwide. Vitamin D is a key area of research, as deficiency is not only associated with musculoskeletal outcomes, but has been correlated with a myriad of illnesses including, infectious diseases, cardiovascular disease, cancers and type 2 diabetes.
