Biography
I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and I have had a variety of roles in Medical Education since April 2000 and have worked at the University of Liverpool Medical School until March 2017 and at Edge Hill University Medical School until April 2024 when I joined the University of Chester as Professor of Medical Education. I have been a research assistant, research associate and research fellow and have held Lecturer in Health Care Education and Senior Lecturer in Medical Education posts. I have been involved in the design and implementation of medical degrees, Physician Associate Degrees, level 7 programmes for clinicians in training and CPD modules for health care professionals. I led the team which wrote the Edge Hill University mediicne programme - the only one of the new Medical Schools to write its own curriculum. My research interests are listed below, but my main aim has always to support curricula prepare medical students to work safely as doctors. I joined Chester in April 2024 as Professor of Medical Education and as admissions lead, co-programme lead and student selected component lead on the MBChB programme. I have presented at a number of international conferences and had a number of intvitiations to speak and have edited a book on medical education. I am currently moving to the role of Head of Applied Medicine whilst continuing to play a leadership role in the medicine programme at Chester.
Teaching and Supervision
Evidence and evidence based practice, research methods, critical appraisal, academic study skills, structure of health systens and regulation. I have wide experience of successful Masters, MRes and PhD supervision.
Research and Knowledge Exchange
Pedagogical research, preparation for practice for clinicians, careers choices for medical students, simulation, prescribing errors, clinical research, qualitative and mixed methods.
