Tanya Downes
Senior Lecturer
Biography
Tanya became a senior lecturer with the Public health and well being department in 2022 and has taught over both pre and post registration programmes. She is currently a senior lecturer in Advanced Clinical Practice and Non Medical Prescribing. She became a FHEA in 2024 after completing her PGCert LTHE. Her career prior to this has been in healthcare. She qualified in 2001 as a RN Child and progressed onto neonatal nursing where she gained her BSc Hons in Professional Practice. She qualified as a Health Visitor/ Public Health nurse in 2006 after completing her PG Diploma / V100 prescribing, and worked as a Health Visitor in North Manchester. In 2008 she undertook her MSc Advance Paediatric Nurse Practitioner/ V300 prescribing, and worked in a variety of primary care setting until moving to education in 2022. She participated in the development of the ACP Paediatric programme in partnership with HEE and developed Clinical Pathways and competencies for Advanced Practice. Tanya is currently a member of the Paediatric Advanced Nurses Network. She is also a long arm assessor for our practice placement students in creative health, simulation and private voluntary organisations within the university. Tanya recently became a supervisor for our International Public Health Masters students and has taught at Alder Hey Children's Hospital on our international Nurses Programme.

Research and Knowledge Exchange
Tanya's BSc dissertation was on the development and implementation of a pain assessment tool on a neonatal intensive care unit. She was the lead for respiratory conditions within clinical practice and developed numerous pathways / protocols and competency packages for paediatrics. Her academic interests are in programme development, the relationship between nature / nurture in the development of nurses and the development of "Plain English" within teaching and assessments. She has a strong interest in neurodiversity in education, and how support systems are used in academia and clinical practice.
