NHS Learning Support Fund

The NHS LSF provides additional funding for eligible healthcare students. It is supplementary financial support to the mainstream student loans system and is intended to support students whilst they train and gain professional registration.

The package includes:

• Training grant of £5,000 per year for new and continuing students.
• Parental support payment of up to £2,000 per student per year to help with childcare costs.
• Specialist subject payment of £1,000 per year for students on degrees that struggle to recruit, including mental health and learning disability nursing (for new students only).
• A regional incentive payment of £1,000 per year for students studying in certain regions of the country where recruitment is particularly hard (for new students only).
• Help towards additional travel and accommodation costs to clinical placements over your normal daily travel costs.
• An exceptional hardship fund of up to £3,000 per student per academic year.

Nursing and Midwifery Students

For those undertaking a Foundation year (Level 3), you may be eligible for funding once you have successfully completed your Foundation Year, and continued onto your undergraduate degree (Level 4).

From September 2020, students on our pre-reg MSc Nursing course, could receive a non-repayable grant of at least £5,000 per year to help with living costs. This funding will be available to students both beginning and continuing their studies.

Allied Health Professional Grant

From September 2020, allied health professional students, which includes students on our undergraduate and postgraduate Nutrition and Dietetics courses, could receive a non-repayable grant of at least £5,000 per year to help with living costs. This funding will be available to students both beginning and continuing their studies.

Social Work Bursary

If you are accepted onto our Social Work course, you may be eligible for a Social Work Bursary of which there are a limited number. The NHS Business Services Authority administers bursaries to students studying approved degree courses in social work on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care.

The undergraduate and postgraduate bursary includes a non-income assessed basic grant and a Placement Travel Allowance. Postgraduate students may also be eligible for a maintenance grant (means-tested) and financial support with tuition fees.
