Course Summary

Education is widely acknowledged as a powerful tool for steering individuals away from involvement in the criminal justice system. Despite its potential, the current reality for the 90,000 people in English prisons paints a bleak picture. Educational efforts within prison walls, often bundled under the umbrella of ‘purposeful activity’, focus on rehabilitation as their core objective. However, the effectiveness of these endeavours remains questionable.

A significant portion of prison education programmes fall short of meeting the needs of inmates, exacerbated by a lack of comprehensive understanding among prison staff. This short course endeavours to bridge this gap by equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to lead and manage education effectively within secure environments.

By addressing key issues, it seeks to enhance the prospects for successful rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals into society.
