Course Summary

The Pre-Master’s course presents an excellent opportunity for you to join our postgraduate courses. At the end of your study, you will achieve competencies in the English language and academic skills needed to succeed on our Level 7 Master’s course.

The Pre-Master’s is specifically designed for international students who need some form of improvement in their qualifications to meet the entry requirements for our postgraduate courses. It is also suitable for students changing their direction of study.

You will also have the opportunity to work full-time between the completion of the Pre-Master's and the start of the Master's.

  • Students studying the April Pre-Master's will start their Master's in October.
  • Students studying the October Pre-Master's will start their Master's in April.

Upon completing the two bespoke modules covered in this course, English for Academic Success and Applied Professional Practice, there are 8 degree areas you can progress to at the University of Chester Business School. They include:

What You'll Study

Duration: This is a three-month programme with two 30-credit modules which will provide a springboard for the standards required at Level 7.

Timetabling: The two modules will be taught consistently over 4 days from 10am til 4pm.

MODULES

  • English for Academic Success: This module will support your development of academic English to the required entry standard for a postgraduate course. Your language competency and requisite academic writing skills will be enhanced after completing this module.
  • Applied Professional Practice (APP): This module captures key concepts focusing on leadership and management of the Chester Business School Master's courses. You will be introduced to a range of topics including Generative AI and contemporary leadership theories. Upon completion of this module, you will be equipped to meet the expected standards required at Level 7.

How you'll Learn

Delivery for both modules will be face-to-face with interactive sessions centered around flipped classrooms, active learning environments and debates to accustom you to the teaching styles at Chester Business School.

Assessments will provide opportunities for group work and individual work, with a range of assessment types including presentations, seminars, reflective writing, essays and portfolio work to help develop the skills needed to succeed in your academic and professional journey.

Additional support will be provided by regular meetings to discuss progress, performance, areas for development and any additional needs to ensure that you are supported fully throughout your time on the pre-masters course.

Beyond the Classroom

You will have the opportunity to engage with professional expertise through masterclasses, industry visits and other experiential learning activities. The proximity of the Business School to Chester City Centre and Chester Business Park has helped create a network of experts who regularly engage with students to enhance their experiential learning activities.

Entry Requirements

  • A UK third-class equivalent degree qualification.
  • Relevant professional work experience and a bachelor’s degree will be considered for entry.
  • Applicants whose highest level of qualification is equivalent to a UK Level-5 qualification (HND), and who have gained professional experience and knowledge in a relevant area.

English Language Requirements

  • IELTS Academic: Undergraduate: 6.0 (minimum 5.5 in each band) or other English language test equivalent.

Fees and Funding

£7,500for the full course (2024/25)

The tuition fees for international students studying this course in 2024/25 are £7,500.
