History and Archaeology

Our teaching team are all research active. The history courses are wide-ranging, allowing you to explore themes from the medieval to the modern day. Archaeological expertise covers a range of prehistoric to medieval periods and everything from heritage management to mortuary archaeology. Students also have the opportunity to liaise with external partners and develop workplace skills.

Our History and Archaeology courses are based at Exton Park, Chester. Our office contains a research library, and we have specialist facilities such as archaeological equipment, a state-of-the-art archaeology laboratory and a workroom.

Our archaeologists investigate British and European prehistoric and historic periods while the historians’ research interests range across the medieval, early modern and modern periods, and over local, British, European and American history. In the 2021 REF over 80% (Archaeology) and 87.5% (History) of our research was considered to be of international significance.
