The University of Chester’s Volunteering Team welcomed a record-breaking number of students to its annual Volunteering Fair, with over 300 attendees engaging with more than 25 exhibitors offering a wide range of opportunities to make a difference in the local community.
Held on the Exton Park campus, the event showcased the breadth of volunteering roles available to students, from conservation and education to social care and mental health support. Exhibitors included Chester Zoo and Oxfam, with many more organisations committed to creating positive change and offering valuable volunteer opportunities to students.

The Fair offered students the chance to connect directly with charities and community groups, learn about the impact of volunteering, and discover roles that align with their interests and studies.
The Volunteering Fair is a key part of the University’s commitment to real-world learning and civic engagement, as outlined in its Citizen Student Strategy. By connecting students with meaningful volunteering opportunities, the event supports the development of social capital, fosters a sense of agency and belonging and empowers students to become engaged citizens. These experiences contribute to the University’s goal of delivering a premium, personalised and purposeful student experience, preparing students for successful futures through impactful engagement and partnership.

The high attendance and engagement from students was praised by many of the organisations in feedback collected after the event, including from The Children’s Society and Claire House Children’s Hospice.
Following the success of this event and interest from organisations to attend future events, the Volunteering Team is planning the next Volunteering Fair, which will take place in February 2026, offering even more opportunities for students to connect with organisations and make a difference.
Abbie Johns, Volunteer Administrator at the University of Chester, said: "We’re absolutely thrilled with the turnout. It’s inspiring to see so many students eager to make a difference. Volunteering not only benefits the community but also helps students develop valuable skills, increase their confidence, and build meaningful connections."
Angie Standish, Head of Careers and Employability and Deputy Director for the Directorate of Access, Skills and Apprenticeships, said: “Our students play a huge part in the strength of our local community, and volunteering is one of the clearest ways we see that in action.

“Volunteering happens all year round, with students getting involved in projects that genuinely support local organisations. All this builds towards our Chester Volunteering Awards and celebration in the spring, where we get to recognise the time, passion and impact our students bring to the community. It’s great to see our students stepping forward, contributing their energy and ideas, and becoming an active part of their community.”
