Celebration of the life’s work of Cheshire artist in new exhibition
A retrospective art exhibition showcasing the work of a former member of the University’s Art and Design department is set to take place next month.

The work of John Renshaw, a long-standing senior lecturer at the University, former Head of Department, Professor Emeritus and prolific painter, will be on display at The Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery from April 5 to May 18 2025.
This exhibition is presented by the Renshaw family in close partnership with the University of Chester and with great support from Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council.
Born and raised in Macclesfield, Cheshire, John's artistic journey began at Stockport College, where his Foundation course played a crucial role in shaping his career ambitions. Inspired and motivated by his tutors, John found the encouragement he needed to pursue his passion for art, later returning as a full-time tutor.
Sadly, John now has Alzheimer’s and his family have chosen Stockport to show his work so that he can share his talent and a sample of his quality collection with the public and be present to see how much it is appreciated.
He is a distinguished figure in the art world and has made significant contributions to the field of painting. His work is characterised by its profound depth, intricate detail, and emotional resonance. This retrospective will feature a diverse array of his paintings, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience his dedication to a consistent and serious production of work.
John maintained an active artistic career, prolific in terms of painting and drawing and with a very impressive individual exhibition biography.
Amongst his many achievements, he was selected for the Royal Academy of Painters Summer Exhibition 2017.
In addition to his remarkable artistic achievements, John dedicated many years to nurturing the next generation of artists through his roles at the University of Chester. As a respected educator, he inspired countless students with his dedication to art and drive for excellence. His influence extends beyond the classroom, as he has played a pivotal role in shaping the creative landscape of the University and the broader community.
Anna Lomas, John’s daughter, said: “Dad’s love of painting, teaching, and talking about art is all consuming. He is immensely proud of his career in this field, and making a difference to those he worked with, and for, along the way is something he cherishes deeply. Now dad has Alzheimer’s. He remembers very little but his passion for art, painting, drawing, and literature is one thing he has not forgotten. We have chosen to show his work now so he can share his love with the public and be present to see how much it is appreciated.”
Bernadine Murray, Associate Professor and Head of School for the Creative Industries, at the University of Chester, said: “John's dedication to his art and his students at the University of Chester is truly commendable. This exhibition not only celebrates his artistic legacy but also his profound impact on the lives of many aspiring artists.”
Chris Millward, Lecturer in Art and Design at the University and curator of the exhibition added: “John’s selfless approach to teaching and commitment to his own practice has been inspirational to myself and many colleagues. It is a privilege to help curate and organise this exhibition with John’s family, an opportunity to repay so much. It has been a difficult task to select just 115 paintings from his vast output, but the work chosen for this retrospective provides the audience with a glimpse of the styles and innovation that John has developed over the last 40 plus years.”
