Courtney’s Chester Made Story: Achieving my dreams with the help of dedicated lecturers
Find out more about how Courtney is Chester Made.
Thinking back to my time at Chester brings back so many precious memories and emotions - feelings of pride, achievement and determination amongst many others.
Before Chester
When I began my journey at Chester, I had already ‘failed’ at the whole university thing. In the previous year, I was studying a course at a different university that I didn’t enjoy, and I didn’t see myself progressing into a career in that discipline. After three months, I gathered the courage to leave.
Believing in Myself
I thought hard about what it was I wanted to do with my career – the answer was something that I enjoyed, and something that would make a difference to other people’s lives. This is when I applied to study a Criminology degree at the University of Chester. As soon as I started, everything felt right. I had the most amazing support from both family and lecturers, but most of all, I believed in myself. I believed that I could dedicate myself to my studies and achieve something that I could be proud of.
If I hadn’t found the courage to leave the course that gave me no joy, I wouldn’t have had the pleasure of discovering my passion for social sciences, and I wouldn’t have been able to manifest this into a career where I could use this knowledge to help others. And had it not been for the support, encouragement and dedication of my lecturers, I would not be where I am today.
What’s Special About Chester
Whilst obtaining a degree is far from easy – it requires a lot of grit and hard work – doing so at the University of Chester was truly an honour. Whenever I’m discussing my time at Chester, whether that’s with family and friends or in a professional setting, the thing I always mention first remains the same. The lecturers. Whilst there were countless times where my knowledge and abilities were challenged, or I began questioning myself, my lecturers were always on hand to provide the most amazing support. Not only this, but they provided content that I found myself excited to learn about. To have had this kind of support throughout my Criminology BSc degree has been the biggest blessing, and I couldn’t have done it without them. The world of education needs more staff like those at the University of Chester – people who put their heart and soul into their work and truly enjoy educating future generations.
My Top Three Modules
Whilst I loved every one of my modules, if I had to pick a top three, they would be: Crime, Harm & Victimisation; Green Criminology, Animal Harm & Wildlife Crime; and ‘Dangerousness’, Mental Health & Crime. The variety of topics taught was incredible, ensuring learning never got stale.
Whilst Criminology can be a sensitive discipline, the ‘Dangerousness’, Mental Health & Crime module has had a lifelong impact on me. Learning about the stigmatisation of individuals facing mental health struggles and those perceived as vulnerable inspired me to pursue a career in helping those facing similar struggles.
Finding My Crowd
My favourite memory of being a University of Chester student was sharing a passion with like-minded people. Creating a sense of community. Whether that was through group discussion in lectures where we lost track of time discussing topics important to us, or socials and quality time spent with fellow society members.
My Role as a Housing Support Worker
I pride myself on the fact that the work I do every day is helping someone in need. As a housing support worker, I help those with mental health issues and/or addictions who are currently homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Whilst this role can be challenging, it is highly rewarding to know that I am making a difference to people and their families who have nowhere left to turn.
Playing a part in providing people with a safe place to live gives me a sense of fulfilment, and I feel like I am using my knowledge and experience to better the world and the lives of others. Going back to a warm, safe home where we can eat a hot meal and gather with our loved ones is something we all take for granted. Mental illness and addiction do not discriminate - and neither should we. Everyone deserves to sleep in a warm bed at night. Everyone deserves a safe space to call home. And helping to provide that for people is such a remarkable privilege.
Put Your Doubts Aside
If I had one piece of advice for future students of the University of Chester, it would be ‘keep going’. Do not for one second doubt your abilities. You have made it this far for a reason. Just give it your all. Keep going and do not stop until you are finished. In times of stress and doubt, remind yourself of the progress you have already made. Believe in yourself so fiercely that you dare to achieve all your dreams. Never give up. Never be afraid to reach out and ask for help whenever you need it. You can achieve anything that you set your mind to. Show up for yourself every day and give it your best shot. Once you walk across that stage in your cap and gown, it will all have been worth it.
Being a University of Chester graduate is a badge I will wear with pride for the rest of my life. A truly unforgettable experience which will never be forgotten.
