From Attending an Open Day to Wearing the Bright Yellow T-Shirt!
Student Ambassador Emma shares her experience of attending an Open Day to wearing the bright yellow t-shirt within their role as a Student Ambassador.
Over four years ago I attended an Open Day at the University of Chester as a a prospective student. I remember being a little nervous and overwhelmed on the Open Day trying to take in all of the information. However, during the Open Day, I was approached by a Student Ambassador who was so welcoming and friendly. The Student Ambassador made me feel more at ease and I was able to ask loads of questions (even though I think my Dad was asking more questions as I was too nervous to ask anything). The Student Ambassador I met on the day was a huge help to my decision-making process of choosing to study at the University of Chester.
Following the Open Day, I made the decision to study at the University of Chester, mainly due to the student-focused and supportive environment on offer. From the Open Day, it was made clear to me that the lecturers and staff at the University see each student as a name rather than just a number. Even from my first day in my first year, it became clear that students really are at the focus of the University staff's work. I quickly discovered that the lecturers and other University staff were keen to support you and help you get the most out of your university experience.
I love the small community that you are a part of at the University of Chester and how you feel that your voice is really heard. The additional opportunities that the University can offer also greatly appealed to me when choosing Chester. For instance, employability opportunities, travelling abroad, industry placements, the Chester Difference Award and the Venture Adventure Programme, were all potential opportunities which I knew I would be able to pursue if I chose to study at the University of Chester.
During my second year, I was informed about the Student Ambassador role and was keen to join the team. I wanted to be able to help prospective students and put them at ease, which the Student Ambassador I met at my Open Day had done for me. The supportive environment of the University, which highly encourages personal development, has given me the confidence and public speaking skills to be able to conduct talks and tours at the Chester Business School. I love being able to talk to prospective students and give them a student's insight into what it is like to live and study at the University.
By showing prospective students lecture halls, the accommodation, and a range of the University's facilities, prospective students can get an insight into what their university experience could be like if they choose to study at the University of Chester.
I feel that the full circle effect of attending an Open Day four years ago to now working as a Student Ambassador is such a rewarding feeling. It is also a reflection of how the University of Chester can provide you with so many opportunities to develop yourself personally, professionally, and academically. I have been able to learn so much from being a Student Ambassador and I have learned and developed so many transferable skills.
