Hands-on year-long research placement proves a great experience for University student
A University of Chester student who enjoyed a 12-month placement working on cutting-edge bio- and chemical technologies is looking to the future as his studies come to a close.

Finn Crotty, 21, from Halifax, had always shown an interest in chemistry, physics, mathematics and engineering. He chose to study Chemical Engineering, having noted the course and the University of Chester had scored highly in student satisfaction and in results scores.
Following his second year on the course, Finn accepted a 12-month placement with Novatica Technologies Ltd, a research and development company co-founded by Natural Sciences Senior Lecturer Dr Maria Sotenko, who offered the placement.
Finn explained: "I was a Junior Research Scientist for a project titled 'BioPro – Low emissions protein production'. It was a great experience and showed my what hands-on research was like; I learned way more skills than I can list and technical knowledge which was very practical. Also, the day-to-day activities improved my lab work etiquette which I think has come a long way.”
The Chemical Engineering course, Finn explained, appealed to him as “it establishes skills in problem-solving, sustainability, and innovation.”
He added: “Another reason was because my degree can offer diverse career opportunities in industries like pharmaceuticals, energy, food production, and environmental engineering.”
Following his studies, Finn is planning to travel across Europe with friends, before finding a job in biochemical engineering.
Reflecting on his time at the University, Finn said: “The University experience has been great as learning close to higher academics has helped me gain experiences/knowledge that you can't read about. Also, I think the lecturers have been great overall as their expertise and industry connections really help students learn and develop into their careers.
“The course mates I progressed with have been the best aspect; it's good as you never struggle with university work by yourself.”
Dr Maria Sotenko said: “Finn Crotty successfully completed a one-year placement at Novatica Technologies Ltd, where he contributed to the development of a fermentation process for converting biogas into protein-rich bacterial biomass.
“In addition to his industrial experience, Finn is an outstanding student, achieving the highest marks in his cohort of chemical engineering students.”
