How Studying at Chester Captured My Heart
International student, Syed, talks about his experience of coming to the UK to study at the University of Chester.
Hi. My name is Syed, and I am from Bangladesh. I came to Chester to study MSc Orthopaedics.
I decided to study in the UK as most of our medical books were written by UK authors, which are respected and followed worldwide. I had this dream to come and learn something from this land of original research and knowledge. I also thought I may get an opportunity to get involved with the world-famous NHS.
While I was searching for an appropriate medical postgraduate course in the UK, I found out that most of the UK universities offer a very limited number of courses, which are mostly basic pre-clinical science.
The University of Chester, on the other hand, offers a variety of medical postgraduate courses in clinical subjects which I did not find at other universities. In addition, courses offered by the University of Chester are much more affordable compared to other university courses.
My course also offered the opportunity to learn the most recent and up-to-date evidence-based practice in the sector of bone diseases and treatment, which encouraged me to take this course without any hesitation.
The modules on my course helped to enrich my knowledge and critical view of evidence-based practice. I particularly enjoyed studying the Orthopaedics, Therapeutic Advances in Orthopaedics, and Research Dissertation modules.
After successfully finishing my course in December 2023, I got my Post Study Work Visa for another two years. I am using this opportunity to work part-time here, while going through the UK medical licensing process simultaneously, to work as a doctor in the NHS.
The University of Chester has a beautiful, natural and calm environment that captured my heart instantly and enabled me to focus on my studies for the duration of the course. The help and support of the lecturers and University staff mean that, like me, you will always feel supported here throughout your student life. The city of Chester, with its natural heritage, will forever be in my heart, so much so that I am considering moving back to Chester if I can get a permanent job here.
The University itself offers a lot to do outside of your studies. In addition, there are quite a few other things to explore in the city too – the famous Chester Zoo, the beautiful river Dee with opportunities to go on a boat trip or try rowing/canoeing, the city walls, the museum, and the lively city centre. I walked along the River Dee every day, which left me feeling refreshed and energised, as did visiting the green spaces in nearby Wales.
During my course, I worked as a student ambassador where my job was to help the University to arrange different events for students/guardians and provide necessary information to prospective students as well.
If you are an international student who is considering studying at the University of Chester, or if you are looking for a lovely city environment, supportive teachers and staff, extracurricular activities and a course that will provide you with up-to-date knowledge and research, enabling you to develop your critical thinking skills, don’t hesitate to apply to the University of Chester – it will provide you with all of these opportunities!
