Innovative project receives national funding to improve health of older women living in nursing homes

Led by Professor Robert McSherry, with Dr Jan Blain, Dr Nellie Makhumula‑Nkhoma and Rhian Crompton, the team has been awarded a competitive grant from The Burdett Trust for Nursing. Their project examines how well nurses understand and apply the Women’s Health Strategy for England, and how this affects the health of older women living in nursing homes.

The study by the team in the Centre for Ageing and Mental Health at the University has already caught the attention of the Department of Health and Social Care, reflecting its potential to influence national practice and policy.

Through interviews with older women, expert consultation, a nationwide survey of nursing‑home nurses and collaborative workshops, the team will create practical tools to help nursing homes strengthen women’s health provision.

The project runs until June, with early findings expected later in the year.

Professor Robert McSherry said: “This funding allows us to shine a light on an under‑researched group and topic. We hope our work will support nursing homes to improve residents’ health and raise awareness of the Women’s Health Strategy for England.”
