Abigail’s Story: My Love of Events Management
Third-year BA Events Management and Marketing student Abigail has organised an exciting line-up of inspirational speakers for her Future You conference, open to all Chester students. She tells us what it’s been like to put on this innovative event and why she chose to study events management.
Where My Interest in Events Management Started
I still remember watching “The Wedding Planner” and feeling captivated by the idea of creating moments that bring people joy. From that point, I said yes to every opportunity, whether it was organising weddings or small celebrations, anything that allowed me to be part of making something special happen.
Why I Decided to Study Events Management and Marketing
I already knew I loved the industry, but I wanted to bolster this with academic knowledge. The event management cohort is a specialist community with space for personalised support, hands‑on learning and genuine connection, and has shaped my experience and knowledge of the industry.
My Two Stand-out Modules
The Live Event module and my Negotiated Study both allowed me to work on real projects, mirroring the industry experience. They gave me the freedom to experiment, make mistakes and grow, while receiving thoughtful guidance from tutors.
My Stand-out Tutor
I first met Professor Tim Brown on a University open day, and since then he has been my Personal Academic Tutor (PAT), my supervisor and my lecturer. His kindness, attentiveness and depth of knowledge have supported me through every challenge. He encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, especially while organising my final‑year conference, Future You, and I have learnt so much from him.
A Bittersweet Experience!
Knowing it would be the final event I organised for my degree made me want to create something meaningful. The process has been enlightening, in terms of logistics, understanding the complexities of managing people, coordinating speakers, and encouraging attendees to sign up for a free event in their own time. There were times when the planning felt overwhelming, and times when I questioned whether everything would come together. Equally, there was also a growing sense of excitement as interest in the conference began to build. Seeing the support grow on platforms such as LinkedIn reminded me exactly why I want to work in events. I love creating experiences that bring people together, spark connection and leave them feeling genuinely happy.
Managing the Conference
This included sourcing speakers and shaping the sessions with them, designing marketing materials, organising catering and décor, and preparing the interview questions for a live discussion with BAFTA award-winning Tom Sherry. It has been challenging, but immensely empowering too. This project has confirmed my passion for the industry and given me practical experience that employers cannot teach quickly. It has strengthened my confidence, sharpened my skills and reaffirmed that this is the career path I want to pursue.

Reflecting on My Course
Overall, the Events Management and Marketing course has been challenging and empowering. I am proud of what I have achieved and grateful for the experiences that have shaped me into the event professional I am becoming. From a young age, I’ve been chasing the joy of creating moments that bring people together, and this course has helped turn that childhood dream into a real career path.
