Professor honoured by Counselling and Psychotherapy organisation

Lisa Oakley, Professor of Safeguarding and Knowledge Exchange at the University, has been awarded an honorary fellowship from Association of Christians in Counselling and Linked Professions (ACC).  

The award has been given “in recognition of commitment to safeguarding and her pioneering work in raising awareness of and spiritual abuse and abuses of power in faith contexts. Including leading research, writing extensively on these subjects and taking part in significant enquiries into abuse linked to faith and belief” with “appreciation and acknowledgement on behalf of ACC Board”. 

Lisa is known for her extensive research, policy work (including with the Church of England) and consultancy, driven by personal commitment to create safer religious environments and redefine safeguarding practices. She has held senior roles, developed influential frameworks for understanding abuse and advocates for survivor-centred approaches, challenging institutions to address spiritual harm effectively.   

She is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society and is Chair of the Safeguarding Advisory Group. She is also a Former Chair of the National of the Church of England's Spiritual Abuse Task and Finish Group.   

Lisa said: “This fellowship means a lot to me as it is a reflection of the work that has been done in raising awareness of spiritual abuse.  

“It is about recognising the voices of those who have experienced spiritual abuse and the cost it has taken them to speak out. It will enable us to continue to develop understanding and practice in this area and inform counselling and therapy in order that those who experience such abuse can be effectively supported.”
