University announces the new Head of its School of Education
The University of Chester is pleased to announce the new Head of its School of Education.
Sue O’Brien joins the University having worked as a leader in Higher Education across a range of universities for over 20 years, most recently as Head of the Sheffield Institute of Education at Sheffield Hallam University and a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her career reflects a sustained commitment to academic leadership, teaching and learning, research, partnership working and the wider civic role of universities.
In her most recent role, Sue has been responsible for a large and diverse academic community, overseeing significant educational provision across undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes, alongside a substantial research portfolio.
Her work is underpinned by a strong commitment to inclusive practice and curriculum quality and draws on her expertise in the understanding of trauma-informed practice. In various roles she has led quality assurance processes, institutional reviews and programme revalidations, supporting the development of innovative curricula, and inclusive approaches to assessment and pedagogy.
Sue has led the development of significant school-led teacher education partnerships, working collaboratively with school partners to align university-based provision with professional practice. Building on these partnerships, as a leader for Sheffield Hallam University's Civic Strategy, Sue has spearheaded numerous external, place-based, research-focused projects with partners across the region and nationally, to support positive outcomes for children and young people.
The award-winning School of Education building at Exton Park features purpose-built Science Suites, dedicated Art and Design spaces, an auditorium and a state-of-the-art cinema room.
The School offers a range of prestigious courses in Education across locations in Chester and Warrington, preparing graduates with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to make a difference in society.
Sue takes over the role from Associate Professor David Cumberland, who has retired from the University.
Sue said: “I value collaborative leadership and look forward to working with colleagues across the University as I settle into my new role.”
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Chester, Professor Eunice Simmons, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Sue O’Brien to the University and look forward to working with her.
“The University has a rich history in Education as the first-ever purpose-built teacher training facility in the country. Sue’s appointment will support the next generation of educators in their future careers.”
