University receives special donation from son of distinguished alumnus

During their visit, Nigel presented his father Donald Goddard’s College blazer, a treasured piece of family and institutional history.  

Donald studied at the former Chester Diocesan Training College, where his time as a student was deeply affected by the outbreak of the Second World War. His education was paused when he was enlisted into the Army, serving overseas with courage and commitment. A gifted cricketer, Donald’s sporting ambitions were curtailed after he sustained an injury during a patrol in Italy, resulting in lasting muscle weakness in one leg. Despite this setback, his determination saw him continue to play cricket to a strong standard and he later became a football league referee, officiating matches into the early 1960s. 

After returning from military service, Donald resumed his studies and completed his teacher training at the College. He went on to build a distinguished career in primary education, teaching a broad range of subjects before becoming a headteacher. He is warmly remembered for his dedication to learning and the positive impact he made within the communities he served. 

During their visit, Nigel shared cherished memories and photographs of his father, offering a moving insight into Donald’s life, character and legacy. Nigel and Sue also spent time in the University Chapel and explored the historic Senate House, formerly the Principal’s House, reflecting on the College’s heritage and Donald’s connection to it.
