Why Study Tourism? Summer’s Seven Suggestions
Third-year International Tourism Management student Summer is excited for her future in the tourism industry. Find out why she recommends this course and all the interesting opportunities she has enjoyed so far.
Reason One - Study a Subject You Are Passionate About
I chose to study tourism because I have an incredible passion for travel and a deep curiosity about how interconnected the industry is with so many other areas — politics, economics, law, transport, and beyond. Tourism offers such a wide spectrum of opportunities, and I love that it allows me to keep learning and exploring new perspectives all the time.
Reason Two - Global Career Opportunities
Looking ahead, I hope my degree will open doors to a variety of tourism careers. I’m particularly interested in heritage and film/TV tourism, but my ultimate goal is to have a career that allows me to travel the world and experience different cultures first-hand.
My favourite tourist destination that I have visited so far has been New York City. I’ve always loved cities, and visiting New York is, in my opinion, the perfect place to go for this. The food, the lifestyle and atmosphere were amazing to experience.
Reason Three - Engaging and Caring Staff
I believe my course is truly outstanding. I’m very fortunate to have such supportive and inspiring lecturers who genuinely care about our learning and development. The teaching is engaging and thought-provoking, and I look forward to every lecture and seminar.
Reason Four - The Chance to Experience Tourism First-hand
Throughout my studies, I’ve had some fantastic opportunities for industry experience. Our field trips have included visits to Chester attractions such as the Cathedral, Stratford-upon-Avon, Broadway in the Cotswolds, Leamington Spa, and Warwick Castle, which especially helped to strengthen my interest in heritage tourism.
Reason Five - Opportunities to Meet Tourism Professionals
The recent Tourism Management Institute (TMI) Conference was a fantastic experience. It was inspiring to meet professionals from across the tourism industry, learn from their expertise, and gain valuable insights into the latest trends and challenges in tourism management. The event really reinforced my passion for the sector and left me excited for my future in the tourism industry.
I am delighted to be newly appointed in the role as a TMI student ambassador, and I am really looking forward to representing the University of Chester throughout this academic year. The role of a TMI ambassador is just beginning and I am so excited to find out what it entails and what I can get involved with. Attending the TMI conference was a fantastic introduction to the organisation and provided real insight into the future of tourism and the skills the industry is looking for.
Reason Six - You Can Work or Volunteer Alongside Your Studies
Beyond my course, I previously served as Vice President of Student Life at Chester Students’ Union. In that role, I worked closely with the local council, police, and other organisations to help the city achieve its Purple Flag accreditation, recognising Chester as a safe and welcoming place for visitors. I continue to volunteer with the council and CRAG (Chester Residents' Associations Group) to ensure that both residents’ and tourists’ needs are balanced and met. I also volunteer with Street Angels, supporting the safety and vibrancy of the city’s nightlife, which in turn helps encourage more visitors to enjoy what Chester has to offer.
Reason Seven - It May Change Your Life!
I believe that coming to university is not for everyone; however, it gives many brilliant opportunities, including making long life friends, gaining real-world experience through placements and giving you an opportunity to study a topic you are passionate about. If you are unsure, my advice would be to give it a go. You never know what might happen and what doors may open for you; it may truly change your life!
