Whether you have an A Level or start as a beginner, the Chinese and French pathway offers you an exciting blend of two globally significant languages and cultures, each offering its own unique perspectives and opportunities. You will combine learning that covers the influence of French-speaking countries with the emerging global importance of China, considered a powerhouse of the modern world . This pathway allows you to gain deep insights into Chinese traditions and philosophies and begin to understand why it is one of the world’s most rapidly evolving nations. The language itself is fascinating to learn, with its intricate characters and tonal nature offering a deeply enriching linguistic challenge. Simultaneously, you will be connected to the rich cultural heritage of Europe and the global Francophone community (spanning much of Africa, the Caribbean and Canada). French is not just a language of art, literature, and history; it is a leading language of international diplomacy and law, spoken by millions across multiple continents.

This pathway provides the exciting opportunity to split your year abroad between China and the French-speaking world. For an innovative, multicultural experience, you can also study Chinese while living in France, through Chester’s strong partnership with universities in the country.

As with all our pathways, you will have the option to add a subsidiary language to your studies. So, you can opt to study the following language combinations on this pathway:

  • Chinese and French
  • Chinese and French with German (post A Level, or beginner)
  • Chinese and French with Italian (beginner)
  • Chinese and French with Spanish (post GCSE, or beginner)
